หนังสือภัยพิบัติทางจิต เป็นหนังสือที่ใช้หลักวิชาจิตวิทยาพื้นฐาน เช่น กลไกการป้องกันทางจิต หรือสภาวะความเครียดในระดับต่าง ๆ มาอธิบายด้วยรูปภาพกราฟิกแทนปฏิกริยาที่เป็นนามธรรมด้วยภาพที่เป็นรูปธรรมเปรียบเทียบกับกลไกต่าง ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น รวมทั้งมีสมุดบันทึก และแบบทดสอบความเครียดเพื่อให้ผู้อ่านได้สังเกตตนเอง ทราบถึงระดับความเครียดของเพื่อหาวิธีการรับมืออย่างถูกวิธี
